Back from the East Coast. I was out there for a wedding in Nantucket and then to see the folks. And then for a demo in New York City. I think I need a vacation from my vacation.
Nantucket was interesting. Small cute fishing/tourist island with a lot of history. It was a good place for a wedding, except for the co$t. Everybody could walk everywhere, from the hotels to the bars to the reception. That was really cool, being able to bump into other wedding guests walking around.
What Nantucket does have these days seems to be an SUV problem. For some reason everybody visiting (not in the wedding party though) seemed to have a need to bring the biggest SUV and drive it freaking everywhere. The downtown was filled with huge trucks on streets designed for walking/horses. It was sad. Even saw a Hummer. What an idiot.

Everytime I head back East durring the summer, I seem to pick the week that is, as the Daily News put it so well in 2000 “Coldest, Wettest July on Record” Last week was no different.
When I made it to NYC for a work meeting on Monday the heat picked up, so I sweat in my nice clothes walking around Wall St. I love New York, even/especially in the Summer, though I melt and complain at the time. There isn’t a city like New York City. THe city so fine they named it twice.
Saw some friends. Ate some canoli. Drank some coffee. All was good.

Trying to set up some playing around with Apple’s new video chat software this weekend. I have high hopes.

Drinking some coffee (whee!) and eating some cereal for breakfast. coffee w/ soymilk reminds me of being in between jobs for some reason. its the taste. nutty.
cleaning up the house since its a crappy day out. high overcast skies. it just looks cold. everything is piled up in the living room. projects got out of hand for everybody.
gotta move my new linux box into the rack and hide it away with enough space to click the power button with a stick or something. trying out iPhoto, i tried it before in the past but for some reason i didn’t like it (this was 1.0.0000000) and it was a little flacky for all my photos to import. got 2.0 and it seems to have handled everything okay. my photos are screwed up since i have many many from the future, 2018. thats what happens when you don’t set the cameras time/date. i hope i can easily fix all the photos. a project for another day.

I’ve been looking for a nice 1U server along the lines of a Netra T1 or X1 or a intel based Linux machine, but they all have been more than I wanted to spend, esp. for the specs that I wanted (500Mhz, 20G, 256M, CD) so I was lucky to find an old Dell mini desktop that had what I wanted plus was only 80$ + tax. Not bad. Installed RedHat on it and threw it in my rack. Its now hosting bugzilla, apache, mysql and what not. Plays nicely with MacOS X’s “X server” so I don’t need a keyboard or mouse or monitor. Unfortunretly it only has one hard drive bay so if I want to increase my storage I’ll have to swap out the main drive.

Work is going well, one more month on the contract I have signed up for. Perhaps we will all get re-uped for July on.

Was out at Ocean Beach last night for a friend’s going away party/bonfire. Drank some wine, huddled by the fire and got sand in my mouth. All in all a good night. SF Muni got us home in record time from the sunset, since it magically turned from a N into a J. whoo hoo.
If you’re from San Francisco, that will make sense, if not, it won’t.

From my vantage point I can see the cargo ships come in and out of the bay. I’ve noticed a lot more the past couple of days, but the weather has been nice so maybe I’ve been watching more.

JavaOne is next week, hopefully we will be a couple badges.
