Naturally Caffeine Free

Friday, May 28th, 2004

since Tuesday.

I think.

Things get hazy. I’m in one of my annual caffeine free periods. The first couple of days are really rough. I have to send out emails to loved ones warning them of the process. But today I feel pretty good. I don’t know why I go back, I always do though. Actually I know why I got back. It’s because I so love coffee!!!!!

But getting some good sleep and slowing down my brain is good too. Esp with the long weekend coming up. Maybe I will stay slow. Maybe I will get very speedy. We’ll see how much I need to do this weekend. Mostly it should be housework and digging out from the week, some WalkSF stuff for the board meeting perhaps. Some reading too. I just finished “The Geography of Nowhere” by James Kunstler and am deciding which book to start on next. Jane Jacobs was just in town so I am tempted to read her “The Death and Life of Great American Cities” but I hear its kind of dense (and it weighs a ton). It’s also competing against some Java books that have been on deck for a bit. We’ll see….

This Sunday is Carnaval in San Francisco, rain or shine.

Moved over from Blogger

Thursday, May 27th, 2004

I’ve been meaning to do this for a while now, and since I had some time the time is now. I set up WordPress earlier in the week and today used its Blogger import script. As you can see, everything worked out fine. I was surprised that the import script was operated via the browser, very nice.

Only a couple issues following the directions (the text didn’t always match up to what was on the blogger screen).

Wordpress does seem to run a lot slower than I expected on my server. I’ll have to see what can be done to fix that. Getting away from ad banners seems to be worth it though, esp for something as low traffic as this blog.

Tomorrow is “Bike to Work Day”

http://www.bike2work.com/

San Francisco Bicycle Coalition

I’ll be biking to work as I do most days.

I’ve had to be dressing a little nicer these days since I have been spending more time out of the cube, so it’s changed how I bike to work a bit.

I used to power to work as quickly as possible in my jeans and my flannel.

Now I bike at a more leisurely pace in the morning with my nice shirt in my backpack. On my way home I try to make up for my morning lolligagging.

Went to the Java Meetup on Monday, nobody else showed up. Last month there were 10 or so developers so I was a little disappointed. Esp. since I then had to drink my oh-too-large cup of coffee that I got to secure the table.

The “Walking in San Francisco” photo posting for May is up. “Walking in San Francisco” is a web site that shows the view of our city from the viewpoint of someone who walks around in it. The idea is to showcase impediments to walking here, in the idea that we can make things better.

This months shows what happens when sidewalks are taking over by street parking
