When I was back in Ithaca I went by my old dorm.
my old room

My old room is the one with the cinder blocks still blocking the front.

They are tearning down a lot of West Campus in order to build new dorms. West Campus Initiative FAQs explains whats going on.

POLKA POLKA POLKA

Sunday, June 27th, 2004

We went to see Polkacide last night at the Bottom of the Hill. I love to hear the people shout, kielbasa beer and sauerkraut!

fun as always, a little sore this morning, as usual.

Not as many people as typically are there, I think many people were at SF pride events but still a good size crowd. Lots of people in the front.

10 years after

Monday, June 14th, 2004

Got back late last night from my 10 year college reunion. A decade went by pretty damn quick. Cornell and Ithaca had changed and nto changed at the same time. Collegetown seemed a bit more dumpy (change of perspective, or maybe just being a week or two after graduation it always looks like that) Lots of empty storefronts in CTown, I heard the really ramped up rents and that pushed a lot of smaller stores out. Lots of high rises with San Franciscoesque rents too. Did the grand tour of all my old apartments. They looked pretty much the same, though my last place really took a turn for the worse, it hasn’t fallen into the gorge yet, but the garage was filled with garbage. I wish I took a picture, since right above the garbage was a sign reading “Please, no garbage or storage in the garage” I guess people don’t read anymore….

Campus was nice, as always. Didn’t get a chance to get Nine’s pizza, nor check out the Plantations or the observatory. My old boss was sick and I didn’t get a chance to see him, but prowled around the Program of Computer Graphics, the hallways seemed the same at least.

Lots of new buildings, and many were gone. Nanofabracation facility seemed to be missing, as did some of the Uhalls. My old dorm Uhall 3 was missing its facade. I could literally look right into my freshmean year dorm room. They were in the process of grinding it all into dust.

Ate too much. Drank too much bad beer. No softserve since ShortStop doesn’t sell in on Sundays, must be some weird blue law.

Lots of cops

Tuesday, June 8th, 2004

San Francisco is crawling with tons of police this week for the bio-tech conference.
I tried to talk down Howard Street today and I was told I would be arrested if walked on the sidewalk. There was no protest going on at this time. I’m conflicted about the protests today, since I think biotech has lots to offer at the same time, I feel that some of the issues need to be addressed such as patenting life, unlabled GMOs, etc…

It still cheeses me off that a private entity (this conference) can take over public property in order to keep protests away.

Anyway, I walked out of my way, got my burrito and had a nice lunch at my desk. I was hoping to sit in Yurba Buena park since it was such a nice day, but it too is closed down by the police.

Passed a Segway in the Bike lane

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2004

Cruising into work today I passed a SegWay on the Valencia Street bikelane. I don’t have a problem with them in the bike lane, since I usually go faster than them and can pass them just like passing a slower bike. This weekend was fun and exhausting/relaxing. Went to the Carnaval parade on Sunday, the best weather for one I’ve seen in 10 years. People were sweating this year instead of shivering as is usual. Afterwards biked up to Ocean Beach to watch the sun go down, inheirited a couple’s bon-fire as they left for the night. We passed it on to an other couple when we left. She was in a mini-skirt, bad choice for Ocean Beach at 8pm. Burr.
