Internet Archive to the Rescue

Wednesday, January 19th, 2005

Well, the annoyance w/ Palm Decktop 4.x for the Mac reared its ugly head again this week. I tried to go to the web page that had the workaround to the problem I orignally outlined months ago:

This Palm hotsync bug always annoys me since it should have been fixed long ago.

After every hotsync of your Palm you get the following message “You now need to reset your handheld computer by tapping the button below” when using a Macintosh.

Here’s a link on how fix (or at least workaround) the problem:

It turns out its no longer available on the web. I get a lot of emails thanking me for having the old pointer to the solution, so here is a new pointer to the old solution. Use the Internet Archive to get a view into the orignal page

The Cough

Wednesday, January 12th, 2005

The only thing I hate more than a summer cold is a winter cold. Picked one up on the plane (or maybe when I got the faceful of dust lighting the pilot light in the gas heater last week). My late night coughing is scaring and utterly freaking out the cat. Wal-tussin DM is my friend. Tried to get into MacWorld today for a bit of expo walking, the badge line was out the door (and this is 2 days after the floor opened). Part of this is due to everybody wanting to see the MacMani, part of this is due to MacWorld Expo appartently changing how you sing in. There were planty of open machines, but you couldn’t use them to get an expo badge. Dumb.

Figured out a Eudora annoyance yesterday. Every couple of months my IPS marks all my read mail as unread and Eudora downloads it all over again, leaving me with 2 or 3 copies. There is an erease duplicates option, but you have to enable th “Esoteric Settings” plug in. To to this, you basically have to follow a magic potion recipe.

Here are the directions for turning on the Esoteric Settings, it was such a pain to find, that maybe this will help someone out.

I’m getting less and less happy with Eudora. There are a couple UI bugs that haven’t gone away in a while, as well as annoyances such as the esoteric settings hoops you need to jump through. I just moved my parents over to MacOS X and the latest Eudora, but I am thinknig I will move myself and them next year to Thunderbird if the spam filtering works.

This is for Vic

Tuesday, January 4th, 2005

Vic asked me why I never mention him here. Consider yourself mentioned. I bumped into Vic in the Oakland airport this week, turns out we were on the same plane coming out of New York, he was 7 rows ahead of me. Too bad, if I had known we could have sat next to each other while flipping through the TV channels on the plane.

Happy New Year!

Monday, January 3rd, 2005

2005 came in to being in a slightly new way. K and I were in Brooklyn seeing ZAGNUT CIRKUS ORKESTAR play at Barbes with some friends. Gotta love the Slavic brass sound. It sure smelled like Polka in the back. This year there was no count down to Midnight, I think because everybody uses their cell phones as clocks, one second it’s 11:59pm, the next, its 12:00am. No count down, only a shout then kissing.

New York was as balmy as in spring, everybody got one more wearing out of this years skirts, before the parkas came out again for january 2nd. Saw my dad’s old high school, he says it looks the same though the neighborhood has gotten nicers. Ate a ton of cheese cake. At least my bodyweight. That was my first new years resoultion, glad I was successful in keeping it.

Back to San Francisco, cold and wet. Caught the last bart in from Oakland last night, instead of getting ropes into the 50$ cab ride. We’ll go out to dinner a couple times instead.
