Waiting on New Orleans

Sunday, August 28th, 2005

We’ve been watching the news from New Orleans all day. I’m hoping for the best, but it is not looking good.
Katrina is slowing making its way north. I experienced a couple small hurricanes in Long Island (most notably Glora in 1985 when we didn’t have power for 10 days) but nothing like what this looks like.

Hearing the reporters talking from the web feeds of the local tv stations is bizzare. Its a slow motion disaster that everyone can see coming.
Its totally unlike the types of disasters that strike places like San Francisco (an earthquake has no warning) or the midwest w/ its tornados.

The thing it makes me think of is somone getting a medical test and waiting for the results not nowing how serious they will be.

I’ve been watching the various webcams as well, and noticed in the last 20 minutes the “bridgecam” has become unwatchable due to water on the lens.

Good luck to everyone who couldn’t or wouldn’t make it out.

Blood boiling

Friday, August 12th, 2005

Sometimes you read something in the paper that just makes your blood boil. Or at least these days boil even more than usual.
Today I read these articles about the person who killed the ducks at the car wash in Campbell.

Do you know this car?

Do you know this car?

The Campbell police feel that they can’t enhance the image of the license plate. I hope the net can.

I tried with gimp and graphicconverter but the skew was too much to get anything. I hope the Campbell police release all the images form the security tape.
I’m sure with image stacking of the video tape images you could get a good image.

What a Summer for Fog

Monday, August 1st, 2005

Our view of San Francisco’s Twin Peaks never ceases to amaze. The fog bank that has been sitting and spilling over the edge most days for the past two months is more and more beautiful everyday. It’s still warm in the neighborhood but you can feel the tendrils of the cool air coming down the hill from Sutro Tower.

Went out for dinner tonight, Sushi nearby, the best part was mochi for dessert. One of these days I will need to get some bulk mochi ice cream for home.

Venus is about to be eaten by the fog, Jupiter is chasing her down there quickly. One of these days I will need to get the telescope out again since it has been so clear at night, but since the days are so hot, city viewing gives too much distortion at night.

People from work have gone up to a conference in Portland, I’m sad I missed it but there is another conference next week her in San Francisco (Linuxworld) that should be interesting as well.
